Commenting on the Government’s proposed £5m flood protection scheme, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Steve Webb said:
"This announcement is laughably inadequate.
"A typical semi-detached house could cost £5,000 to flood-proof, so £5m would barely meet the costs for just 1,000 homes.
"There needs to be a nationwide strategy to tackle flood risk, working in partnership with local government, instead of these Whitehall gimmicks designed simply to grab quick headlines."
