Due to the sad death of Labour MP Gerald Kaufman, there will be a by-election in Manchester Gorton.

In Manchester Gorton, we are the clear challengers to Labour and this is a by-election we’re taking really seriously - our first action weekend was three weeks ago and Tim Farron will be opening our new campaign office (for both Manchester Gorton and the Manchester Mayoral campaign) tomorrow.

Manchester Gorton is promising territory for us and we've done well here in the past; every ward in the constituency has had a Lib Dem councillor during the last eleven years. We finished in second place in the constituency every time until 2015 – including 33% in 2010.

To top that off, we finished in second place in the constituency every time until 2015 – including gaining 33% of the vote in 2010.

We've also selected a great candidate in Jackie Pearcey. Jackie is an extremely well-known local candidate with a strong track record of helping people in the community.

62% of people in this constituency voted Remain. In Richmond Park and Witney, we developed new campaign techniques for switching pro-Remain Conservatives. This by-election gives us the chance to do the same against Labour.

50% of the population are under 35 with large numbers of Remain-voting students and young professionals - these are groups that, longer term we need to win support amongst these groups to continue to rebuild as a party - and the lessons we learn in this by-election will help us win other seats at the next General Election, whenever it comes.

With all that said, the only thing that will really make the difference is you. If you have local elections near you, please, make sure you elect more Liberal Democrat councillors in your area - but if you don't, then we need you in Gorton - because the only limit on the result we can get, is what you can do!
