She was created a Life Peer in 1997.
In December 2002 she was voted 'MEP of the Year' in a poll of more than 20,000 people across 72 countries, conducted by the European Voice Newspaper.
Emma has recently been rated as the joint most environmentally friendly MEP in the UK by a consortium of environmental groups led by Friends of the Earth.
· Her NGO work includes the chairmanship of The AMAR International Charitable Foundation; Presidency of the Caine Prize for African Writing; Trusteeship of the Booker Prize for English fiction and of the Booker Prize for Russian Fiction.
· She has been appointed as the World Health Organization Envoy on Health, Peace and Development.
· Doctor Honoris Causa: North London University (now London Metropolitan University) for work in the field of higher education for the disabled; the "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Timisoara and the Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest, both for services to the enlargement of the European Union.
