12 April 2005
The first Africa Liberal
Network Workshop on youth campaigning was held in July 2004, it was attended
by forty young participants from twelve different African countries. Three
trainers (Candy Piercy, Alex Folkes and Gerald Vernon Jackson) and Ellen Kelly
(Africa Liberal Network Officer) ran the workshop in Lusaka, Zambia.
The objectives of the workshop were to encourage party development skills for liberal parties in Africa, to provide a forum for parties to share experiences and ideas, to introduce the concepts of grassroots campaigning and to provide practical information on campaign techniques.
These objectives were pursued with reference to employing ideas that had worked in a specifically African context, rather than simply transfering techniques from the UK. For example one part of the programme involved participants working in cross-country groups and thinking of what common factors both hinder and benefit a youth wing of an African political party in particular.
The workshop looked at different methods of campaigning, such as asking participants to think of fifty different ways of promoting a political message. Another key part of the workshop was training in media and public speaking skills. These were areas where participants from countries with strong oral traditions, such as Zambia, stood out.
The workshop was highly successful, providing a valuable opportunity for networking, increasing the skills of the participants and in addition the UPND (the Liberal Democrat Sister Party) gained favourable publicity in Zambia. It is hoped that in the future the Africa Liberal Network will be a source of trainers itself.
