EXPULSION OF MONITORS IN BELARUS UNACCEPTABLE - MOORE

Responding to reports that a further seven members of an unofficial, Scandinavian election monitoring team have been forced to leave Belarus, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Moore MP, said:

"These expulsions are unacceptable: the election observers were performing a important task of real benefit to the Belarusian people.

"Against a background of serious restrictions of press and political freedom, election observers have a vital role in trying to ensure free and fair elections.

"The representatives from Liberal Democrats sister parties have an established track record on promoting democracy.

"This is a serious misjudgement by the Belarus government. It should accept the presence of independent monitors, and respect the democratic rights of the Belarusian people."
