Green tax switch essential to tackling Climate Change – Horwood

Mon, 20 Sep 2010

“We talked about a green tax switch in opposition. The time has come to put it into practice.”

Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference today called on the Government to shift the tax burden to polluters to meet its radical and ambitious goals to make Britain’s economy green and sustainable.

Conference today passed a motion calling for:

·        The reform of the Climate Change levy to shift the tax burden to the polluter to promote energy efficiency and investment in renewable energy

·        Ensuring that changes to the price of carbon emissions do not result in windfall profits for nuclear energy providers

·        The rapid implementation of the Government’s air travel taxation reforms

Commenting, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Martin Horwood said:

“Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for real plans to tackle climate change and now the Coalition has pledged to be the greenest government ever. This is ambitious and absolutely right.

“To achieve the tough goals we have set, will require hard work and it will be critical to shift the balance of taxation to change people’s habits: we need to raise the cost of polluting activities, promote energy efficiency and stimulate green energy.

“We talked about a green tax switch in opposition. The time has come to put it into practice.”
