Stamping out the mental health stigma and improving mental health care services

Liberal Democrats in government are leading the campaign to stamp out the mental health stigma.

Speaking at a mental health conference he was hosting with Liberal Democrat Care and Support Minister Norman Lamb,  Nick said:

"Bit by bit, we are making progress: transforming people’s attitudes and putting in place the reforms necessary to deliver long lasting improvements in our mental health services."

Liberal Democrats in government have delivered a number of measures to improve mental health care and and put mental health on equal footing with physical health.

Since 2011, Liberal Democrats in government have invested £400m to increase access to talking therapies across England.

We’re providing an extra £120m this year to introduce waiting times for mental health so that people with conditions such as depression receive treatment in a minimum as six weeks, with a maximum wait of 18 weeks.

We are also investing an extra £150m over five years to improve services for children and young people suffering from eating disorders.

In the Autumn Statement Liberal Democrats committed to a further £2bn for front-line NHS services. In line with this extra funding, NHS England has written to every Clinical Commissioning Group calling on them to increase their mental health spending in real terms.

Nick is also calling for all NHS trusts to commit to a new ambition for zero suicides.

In government Liberal Democrats are delivering more support and funding for mental health care services and our plans for the next Parliament include doing even more to bring mental health in line with physical health.

Nick added:

"In the Liberal Democrats, we want to go much, much further: with plans to invest half a billion pounds per year to improve mental health care in the next Parliament, within our wider commitment to increase investment in the NHS, paid for, in part, by trimming some of the tax-breaks for the richest people in society."
