The Liberal Democrats today invited Ron Gould to the House of Commons in order to clarify his report into the Scottish Parliament Elections.
The confusion comes after Mr Gould sent a "letter of clarification" to the Electoral Commission, following considerable media coverage of the report.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scottish Secretary, Alistair Carmichael MP said:
"The purpose of most clarifications is to make the situation clearer.
"Having read Mr Gould’s letter to the Electoral Commission and having heard his comments on Newsnight on Wednesday, his position is more opaque than ever.
"I am writing to Mr Gould to invite him to the House of Commons so that he might explain his thinking.
"It is important to remember that the purpose of his Commission was to establish what went wrong in May and why. His initial report appeared to answer these questions. His subsequent comments, however, pose more questions than they answer.
"This is an issue which is too important to be left unresolved."
