Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Affairs Secretary, Edward Davey will today speak to Zimbabwean’s protesting in Parliament Square, in support of their right to work in Britain.
Commenting, Edward Davey said:
"Gordon Brown has shown leadership on Zimbabwe on the international stage, but he has completely failed to deal with the issue of Zimbabweans suffering in Britain.
"It is unacceptable for Gordon Brown to claim that no one is under threat of being deported to Zimbabwe while his Government continues to fight for the right to do so in the courts.
"Some failed Zimbabwean refugees have been held in detention centres for nearly two years without being deported. This is more befitting of Mugabe’s brutal regime than a country that was once famous for its freedoms.
"Zimbabweans must be allowed to work to support themselves. This would be beneficial both to the economy and also to these refugees who are forced into a destitute existence, surviving only on minimal state handouts."
Commenting on the Zimbabwean Government’s claim that new sanctions on the country could lead to civil war, Edward Davey said:
"This is just another cynical ploy from Mugabe’s regime, designed to split the international community.
"The UN Security Council should ignore this pathetic threat and move quickly to impose the sanctions rightly proposed by Britain and the US."
