Speaking today at The Sustainable Communities 09 Conference, Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Simon Hughes outlined the Liberal Democrat vision for creating green jobs, warm homes and smaller energy bills.
The Liberal Democrats’ Warm Homes scheme would be a national programme involving government, local councils and the private sector to insulate every home in Britain to the highest energy efficiency standards within the next 10 years.
Simon Hughes said:
“The Government’s failure to make our homes energy efficient means that there are still 4m people living in fuel poverty.
“When I speak to our local councils, they are up for ending this waste of energy and money; when I speak to people in industry they are up for it too, now we just need to do it.”
“I will campaign to make sure every council is free to deliver warm, energy efficient homes. The Government must give councils access to important energy saving information such as energy performance certificates and local energy usage in order to achieve this.
“In this country we have a huge unrealised potential in renewable energy. This means local projects that create energy through wind, solar or biogas. This has the potential to drive technological change, to create local jobs and to allow people to provide for themselves”.
