Brown should insist Karzai forms government of national unity says Clegg

Mon, 02 Nov 2009

“Afghanistan will never see the dramatic change it needs unless Karzai works with his opponents," said the Liberal Democrat Leader.

Commenting on Gordon Brown’s congratulation of President Karzai on his re-election in Afghanistan, Nick Clegg said:

“Rather than simply congratulating President Karzai, Gordon Brown should insist that he forms a government of national unity.

“Afghanistan will never see the dramatic change it needs unless Karzai works with his opponents to reach across ethnic and tribal divisions, stamp out corruption, and start to build the legitimate institutions of central government that the country so desperately needs.

“224 brave British troops have sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan. We owe it to them and the men and women still serving not to ignore the lack of legitimacy of a Karzai presidency. We cannot risk failure for our brave troops as they try to prop up a government no-one believes in.”
