Government must drop housing allowance claw back plans - Teather

Thu, 26 Nov 2009

“We can only raise standards across the whole sector by improving conditions for those at the bottom," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister.

Commenting on today’s Shelter report urging the Government do more for private tenants,  Sarah Teather said:

“Shelter’s report throws some much-needed light on a massively overlooked sector.

“Those renting privately are often in as much financial difficulty as people in social rented accommodation.

“It is outrageous that ministers want to snatch back up to £15 a week from some of these most vulnerable tenants, many of whom are already struggling to pay their rent.

“We can only raise standards across the whole sector by improving conditions for those at the bottom.  I hope this report will be a much-needed wake up call to the Government. They need to give proper attention to the 8m families who rent their home on the private market.”
