Horwood: We need to increase resilience to attack

Fri, 18 Jan 2013

Commenting after the Prime Minister’s statement on the Algerian Hostage Crisis, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Party Committee on International Affairs, Martin Horwood said:

"We fully support the Prime Minister's calm and measured response to this crisis and join him in expressing sympathy for all those affected and in particular the family of the one confirmed British casualty.

These events underline the importance of international co-operation to build resilience against terrorists groups like Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. The European Union's military training mission in Somalia is a successful example of this kind of co-operation, as we hope the planned EU training mission to Mali will also be. We need to increase resilience to attack and increase the chances for local forces to resolve crises like this with minimum loss of life."
