Lib Dems block ID cards for Scottish public services
Lib Dem ministers in the Scottish Executive have blocked use of Labour's planned mandatory ID cards for access to devolved services in Scotland.
Lib Dem MSP Jim Wallace said: "The truth is that ID cards will fail to combat terrorism and make little or no difference in tackling illegal working and cutting crime.
"The harsh reality is that the UK Government's ID card scheme is nakedly opportunistic and the certainty is the huge cost of ID cards, a cost that will have to be borne by every individual.
"The UK Government should face the facts and abandon its proposed ID cards scheme before any more time or expense is wasted on it."
