Biography
Greg Mulholland entered Parliament at his first attempt in 2005, gaining this seat from the Labour Party with a swing of 9.6 %.
Greg Mulholland read Politics followed by Public Administration and Public Policy at York University. Before entering politics, Greg spent more than five years working in promotional marketing where he picked up an aptitude for campaigning strategy working for several top marketing agencies on national promotional campaigns for leading brands. Greg has also been a prominent campaigner for CAFOD, a leading international development NGO, and TIDAL (Trade Injustice and Debt Action Leeds) and has a commitment to international development and global justice. Away from politics, Greg enjoys hill-walking (he is nearly half way through the Scottish Munros) and is a rugby league enthusiast (Leeds Rhinos); he is a member of the Friends of Hyde Park Picture House.
Greg first got a taste for politics when, as a politics A level student, he was thrown in at the deep end and found himself canvassing in the Knowsley North by-election of 1986. Before being elected to Parliament, he was a Leeds City Councillor representing Headingley ward from 2003. In 2004 he was appointed Lead Member for Corporate Services with responsibility for IT and HR; he was also elected to Metro (the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority) and was Leeds District Spokesperson 2004-5. He remains committed to improving public transport in Leeds and was at the forefront of the campaign for Supertram in the city.
As an MP his work on local issues includes: campaigns for safer student housing, for post-offices and against the Council Tax and tuition fees.
He is Lib Dem Shadow Schools Minister and the Select Committees on Northern Ireland and Work and Pensions; he is Lib Dem contact for the National Passenger Transport Executive group and a member of the All Party Groups for Rugby League and Small Shops.
