BIOGRAPHY

John Leech entered Parliament at his first attempt in 2005, gaining this seat from the Labour Party. He has been reselected to stand here at the next general election.

John Leech was educated at Manchester Grammar School, Loreto College (Moss Side) and Brunel University where he read history and politics. He is a lifelong Manchester City fan and an amateur dramatics enthusiast (Manchester Road Players); his father is a Methodist minister. Before becoming an MP, John worked as a trainee manager for McDonalds and part time at the RAC in Stockport as a call centre insurance claims handler.

He has been a member of Manchester City Council since 1998; before his election as MP, he was Deputy Leader of the 38 strong Liberal Democrat Group and Group spokesperson on Planning and the Environment.

As an MP his work on local issues includes: campaigning for the extension of Metrolink to South Manchester; and for improvement of NHS dentistry in South Manchester.

He is a member of the Shadow Transport team and the Select committee on Transport; he founded the All-Party Group on Light Rail and belongs to the Parliamentary Football Team.
