BIOGRAPHY

John Pugh has been Southport's Member of Parliament since 2001 and is now a member of the Liberal Democrat health team. He has been reselected to stand here at the next general election.

John was born in Liverpool on June 28th 1948 and graduated in philosophy from Durham University before becoming a teacher. He taught in secondary modern, comprehensive and independent schools and prior to his election as MP was head of philosophy and religious studies at Merchant Taylors' School in Crosby.

He has lived in Southport since 1974 and joined the Liberal Party there in 1977. He represented Birkdale ward as a Sefton councillor from 1987 to 2001 and was elected leader of the Sefton Liberal Democrat group in 1992. He was leader of Sefton Metropolitan Council at the time of his election to Parliament at the 2001 General Election in succession to Southport's former Liberal Democrat MP, Ronnie (now Lord) Fearn. John says of his time on the council that his chief source of pride was keeping education spending up in good years and bad, and not ducking tough decisions.

Since election as an MP John says he has relished the independence he has to criticise the council when it makes mistakes, and to praise it when it does well. In the 2001-5 Parliament John served on the Transport, Local Government and Regions Select Committee. He was added to the Liberal Democrat Health team under Steve Webb in 2006 after the election of Sir Menzies Campbell as party leader. He currently serves as Treasury Spokesperson alongside Colin Breed in Nick Clegg's Shadow Cabinet

John's personal interests include the study of philosophy, logic, mental health, education and transport issues. He relaxes by listening to music, watching films, supporting Liverpool FC, messing about with computers and lifting heavy weights. He and his wife, Annette, have three daughters and a son.
