BIOGRAPHY
Matthew Taylor entered Parliament at his first attempt in 1987, holding this seat for the Liberal Democrats. He will be standing down at the next general election.
After attending Treliske School, Truro, and University College School, Hampstead, Matthew Taylor read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. He was appointed Economics Policy Research Assistant to the Parliamentary Party, seconded to David Penhaligon MP, in July 1986. Matthew Taylor is proud to have represented the constituency in which he spent his early childhood, and where he started his education. He takes a continuing special interest in education policy and the environment.
He was Chairman of the party’s Campaigns and Communications Committee
[1992-94] when it developed the ‘target seats strategy’ for the 1997 General
Election in which the party won 46 seats.
During his twenty years as an MP he has been involved in many campaigns, both locally and nationally. These have included fighting against tuition fees, the council tax, dolphin deaths and unfair water bills; and for a fair deal for Royal Cornwall Hospital and other local services, affordable housing, NHS dentists, local Post Offices and Cornwall’s sleeper trains.
At 24, he was the youngest MP, which he remained for 10 years. He was the
spokesman on Energy [1987-88], Local Government, Trade and Industry
[1989-90] and Education [1990-1992]. In September 1994, Matthew was appointed
Environment spokesman; in 1997 he was awarded the 'Green Ribbon Award'
(sponsored by the BBC Wildlife Magazine) as Britain's "most effective
environmental MP"; the judges' commented: "Matthew Taylor is persistent,
organised and energetic in his championing of the environment." He served
as Shadow Chancellor [1999-2003], when he became chair of the Parliamentary
Party [2003-05]. He was Shadow Minister for Social Exclusion from 2006
until January 2007.
Following his marriage to partner Vicky and the birth
of their son, Arthur, Matthew will be standing down at the next election in
order to spend more time with his family.
