BIOGRAPHY
Annette Brooke has been Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and
Poole North since the 2001 General Election. She is the party’s shadow minister
for children, young people and families.
Annette Brooke was a
tutor with the Open University for 19 years from 1971, and a school
teacher from 1974 to 1994. Before giving up teaching to concentrate full-time on
politics she was Head of Economics at Talbot Heath School for Girls in
Bournemouth.
Annette was elected a councillor on Poole Borough Council in
1986, and was for two terms the council’s deputy leader (1995-7 and 1998-2000).
She was Liberal Democrat Group leader on the council (2000-2001) and served as
Mayor of Poole in 1998.
She was elected MP for Mid Dorset and Poole North
by a majority of 384 votes at the 2001 General Election and was appointed a
Liberal Democrat Whip and a spokeswoman on Home Affairs by the then party
leader, Charles Kennedy.
Following the 2005 General Election, at which
Annette held her seat with a much increased majority of 5,482, she became a
spokeswoman on Education and Skills. After the election of Sir Menzies Campbell
as leader in March 2006, Annette was given responsibility for acting as
parliamentary spokesperson on all issues concerning children, young people and
the family and continues to do so under Nick Clegg.
Annette is married
and has two adult daughters. She is the joint owner of a small family business
trading in rocks, minerals and gemstones.
