Biography

Lorely Burt is the Liberal Democrats' Shadow Minister for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform

After graduating in economics from University College, Swansea, Lorely started her career working in the prison service as an assistant governor before working for Beecham, Forte and Europcar in the field of personnel and training. She then moved back to the Midlands to set up her own award-winning training company, and worked as a director of companies in marketing and financial services.

Elected to Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in 1998, she stood for election in Dudley South constituency in 2001, and for the West Midlands region at the 2004 European Parliamentary election.

After selection as Liberal Democrat candidate for Solihull Lorely moved into part-time business consultancy so that she could devote more time to campaigning on local issues affecting Solihull, enabling her to overturn a large majority in a traditionally Conservative seat.

Following her election she was appointed a Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Northern Ireland and served on the Treasury Select Committee. After the election of Sir Menzies Campbell to the party leadersip in March 2006, Lorely was appointed spokesperson on Small Business and on Women & Equality. In 2007 Lorely was appointed Shadow Minister for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

Lorely is married to Richard Burt, who is leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Dudley Council and was parliamentary candidate for Shrewsbury & Atcham at the 2005 General Election, and she has a daughter, Emma, and a step-son, James.
