Radical new proposals to reduce poverty and tackle inequality in Britain, including: more focus and funding on early years education; reforms to child benefit and tax credits; reforms to the benefits system; increasing the supply of affordable housing; providing routes and assistance to get individuals back to work; reforming pension legislation to pull more pensioners out of poverty; and cutting the extra costs paid by poorer households for utilities and other services.

Norman Lamb branded the sharp rise in hospital readmissions as a "false economy" in the health service. Figures highlighted by the Liberal Democrats show that emergency readmissions for patients aged 16 and over have risen by almost a fifth since 2003.

Elderly people paid £1.6bn in charges for their social care last year, new figures released today have revealed. These charges, levied on older people by local authorities under the means-tested social care regime, accounted for one fifth of all spending on services for older people, which totalled £8.9bn.
