YOUR ONLINE TOOLS

We've provided various tools to help you promote the party and its campaigns if you run your own website or blog:

In addition to using some of these tools, you might want to use Google Adwords to help promote your website or blog. If you sign up via this link you will also be helping raise money for the party too:

Get your Lib Dem toolbar

We also have a toolbar for your web browser (Internet Explorer and Firefox on Windows).It brings together in one place the latest news from the party, a convenient set of links to party sites, a Google search box and even the latest weather forecast.

The toolbar also makes it easy for you to help raise money for the party whilst you browse the internet. Using the Google search box will earn the party a cut of the advertising revenue from the Google adverts which then appear, whilst the list of party websites includes a "Shop" link that takes you through to all our deals, such as the one with Amazon. Each time you shop with Amazon via this link the party gets paid a commission and there are similar arrangements for all the other deals listed.

Along with other features, it also includes a link to all the latest debates and discussion on Liberal Democrat blogs so you can easily keep in touch with debates in the party all year round.

You can get the toolbar from LiberalDemocrats.OurToolbar.com.

Campaign buttons for your website

You can display a set of buttons showing the latest Lib Dem campaigns and other useful links by using the following piece of Javascript:

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showButtons.php">
</script>

It displays this:

The list of buttons gets automatically updated as new petitions are launched, events move on and new developments take place. So you get an automatic set of up-to-date links without having to update your website each time! There is also a WordPress widget available which does the same thing.

You can also customise how the buttons appear on your site by adding extra parameters to the showButtons command:

  • Add buttons=x to limit the number of buttons to x
  • Add exclude=y to exclude button #y from the list displayed on your site
  • Add &text=off to turn off the display of text under the buttons
  • [Advanced use] Add: format=html if you are using PHP or something similar and want the original HTML so you can manipulate it further

For example:

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showButtons.php?buttons=3&exclude=2">
</script>

If you wish to exclude more than one button, separate the numbers with a hyphen; for example 3-12-51 would exclude buttons three, twelve and fifty one.

If you have a Prater Raines website, you can add this script by:

  1. Log in to the management area of the site
  2. Select the 'Extras' panel and scroll down the page to the 'Add HTML' section
  3. Add:
    <tr><th>Liberal Democrat Campaigns</th></tr>
    <tr><td><script type="text/javascript"
     src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showButtons.php">
    </script></td></tr>
  4. Select the position; 'At the top of the menu' works well
  5. Click the button 'Add HTML source'

If you have a site that uses Mambo or Joomla, you need to have the mod_html module installed. This then allows you paste in any HTML - so you can copy and paste in the basic code:

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showButtons.php">
</script>

Recruit members and earn money

It's always a good idea to have a link for people to join the party - but if you use our special link, you will also help raise money for your local party too!

Just link to the following address, where xxx is the number for your local party. (Your Membership Secretary will know the number - it's on the top of all the membership reports - or email membership@libdems.org.uk).

https://www.libdems.org.uk/support/join.html?ref=XXX

Please note the https at the beginning of the web address. Anyone who joins the party this way will appear in future membership secretary reports and the local party will have the appropriate sum of money added to its service fee payments. The same percentage service fee is paid as if someone was recruited locally on the doorstep.

Show the latest Lib Dem film

You can automatically display the latest Liberal Democrat film on your website or blog by just adding the following simple piece of code:

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showTV.php">
</script>

It displays this:

Note: you can add ?width=xxx to the end of the URL to specify the width of the display box. You can also add &text=off to turn off the display of text under the video, e.g. ?width=190&text=off

Sign up supporters

There is another piece of Javascript available, this time to make it easy for you to add a sign up box for the party's e-supporters network on your website or blog:

<script language="JavaScript"
src="http://petitions.libdems.org.uk/showCode.php"
type="text/javascript"></script>

It displays this sign up box:

New Blogger sidebar tools

If you are a Blogger user and use the New Blogger system, there is a set of sidebar plugins available that allow you to easily add the campaign buttons, supporter sign up box and latest party film display mentioned above. There are also plugins to add a "join the party" link that will earn money for your local party and a link to Liberal Democrat blogs.

The plugins are all available on the party's members-only website. (You will need to login on the page that comes up).

Widgets for WordPress

If you have a WordPress website, there are five free Liberal Democrat widgets available. (Note: sites hosted with wordpress.com aren't allowed to add widgets, so you won't be able to use these - sorry!)

To use the widgets:

  1. Download the widget file using the link above and save it or upload it into your widget plug-ins directory using the same file name
  2. Go into the 'Plugins' area of your Wordpress installation and activate the widget
  3. Go into the 'Sidebar Widgets' section of the 'Presentation' area of Wordpress, and drag your new widget to the desired location
  4. Hit 'Save Changes'

Show the latest news stories

You can easily display an automatically updated list of the latest news stories published by the Liberal Democrats in a range of different areas by using our range of feeds.
