Climate change discussion

Climate change remains in and out of the news. We have already seen the current government's attitude in their removal of the subsidy for onshore wind power, and a lack of discussion in the July 8th budget. On the other hand Pope Francis has released a powerful encyclical Laudato Si' which unequivocally argues the case to recognise anthropogenic climate change, and argues for a connection between climate change and equality which should gladden the heart of any liberal democrat.

We will be holding a meeting open to LibDems and the public in Lewes on 30th July on the topic “Climate change: fear and hope”. 7.30 - 9 p.m. Cliffe Hall, Cliffe High Street, Lewes, BN7 2AH. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. We seek to discuss the liberal approach to climate change and the way we live our lives, and also how we can combine with others to make an impact.

Speakers will be:

- Rob Parsons, a LibDem from Ringmer, on the general background and LibDem policy.

- Sue Taylor from Balcombe on the struggle against fracking in Balcombe and the resulting emergence of a community based politics there.

- Angela Howard, a CAFOD representative from Ringmer, who will introduce the encyclical and discuss some of its main points and implications.

None of us will speak for long. We intend the evening to be an exploration for everybody, so please bring questions, ideas and points of view.
