Step 1 - Who can I email?

Your local party will have people they have permission to email, such as many of your members & supporters on Lighthouse.

You can download a list of members and supporters you have permission to email (some may have opted out of email contact), on Lighthouse and then upload this list into the email platform of your choosing (more on this in step 2).

Find out more about how to use Lighthouse here: https://www.libdems.org.uk/lighthouse

You might also have email addresses on Connect, Nationbuilder or Prater Raines. However, these are not necessarily emails that you have permission to contact. With these emails, it’s best to take a look and check:

  • Have you contacted them in the last six months?
  • Have you got a record of them consenting to receive emails (e.g. ticking an opt-in box on a survey, an email asking to be added to an eFocus list - being in a database is not, on its own, a record of consent!)
  • Have they opted-out of emails before?

If the answer to any of these questions is no - don’t email them. And if you’re not sure of the answer to any of these questions - don’t email them.

You’re better off being safe, as contacting someone by email without consent is a major breach of GDPR.

If you need more info on GDPR - then the party has an entire manual that will guide you through everything: www.libdems.org.uk/gdpr

Once you’ve worked out who you can email, the next thing you need is a way to send emails.
