Rules for Facebook Groups

Updated June 2020

Facebook groups will, no doubt be an important part of campaigning in the upcoming Leadership Election. Many groups will have their own rules governing this. Some groups will have no rules. The party has also set up an official election discussion group that will be where most of the activity takes place.

Official Facebook Group

Leadership Election candidates (or their teams) may make 1 post per week in the group. Their candidate pages will be permitted entry to the group and only that page may be used to post.

In addition to this, they may post their manifesto on the manifesto thread.

Party HQ will post links to official emails, AdLib articles and any other facilitated communications.

The frequency rules may be revised if there are a significant number of candidates.

Post Content

Candidates may make posts that contain:

  • Text
  • Images
  • Video

If a post contains an image, then either as part of the post text or as a comment, a plain text description of the image must be posted, preceded by the letters “PT”.

If a post contains a video then the video must be subtitled.

All other rules relating to internal election content still apply, which can be found here: www.libdems.org.uk/leadership-election-rules.

Questions

Members are encouraged to post their questions in the group, but questions posted in the main group must be directed at all candidates. Questions can also be asked of individual candidates in reply to their posts or manifesto groups, but must comply with the hustings rules, which can be found here: www.libdems.org.uk/leadership-election-rules

Posts that endorse candidates must be confined to the endorsement thread and replies to candidates posts and not posted directly in the group.

Complaints

If you believe someone has made a comment that breaches the group rules, leadership election rules, or is out of line please use Facebook’s tools to report the comment to group admins.

Admins will review the content as soon as possible (we are humans and do have to sleep, eat and work). If content is found to be out of bounds, it will be removed and the original poster will be informed why.

After 3 removals, a commenter’s posts will be set for approval and if there is a further incident, they will be removed from the group permanently.

Before posting or replying, please THINK:

  • Is it True?
  • Is it Hurtful?
  • Is it Illegal?
  • Is it Necessary?
  • Is it Kind?

And if it isn’t those things, don’t post it.

In extreme cases, we may report members whose behaviour is particularly egregious to the Standards Officer and this may result in your expulsion from the party.

Other Facebook Groups

Candidates should only post in Official Party Groups, a list of which can be found on the Directory (https://libdemdirectory.org.uk). Posting is at the discretion of the admins and candidates and their teams should contact the admins to check the rules before posting.

Candidates should not post in non-party affiliated Facebook Groups.

Members may of course post wherever they like, as long as they comply with the rules of the Facebook groups.

A suggested set of rules for Official Groups are as follows:

Rules for Posting in Official Groups that allow candidates to post:
