ISBN 978-1-910763-61-2 Published by The Conference Office, Liberal Democrats, 1 Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PN. Published and promoted by M. Dixon on behalf of the Liberal Democrats, 1 Vincent Square, London, SW1P 2PN. Welcome to Conference from Ed Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Leader I am delighted to welcome you to our first in-person autumn conference since 2019 – and my first as leader of our great party. I’m especially looking forward to us all celebrating together our amazing recent successes in local council elections and at those historic by-elections! I’m still buzzing from Sarah Dyke’s incredible victory in Somerton and Frome, and I’m sure you are too. We are winning again because we are working hard, listening to people, and offering real hope in the face of big challenges. Everywhere I go, people are fed up with being let down and taken for granted by this out-of-touch Conservative Government. They are struggling to make ends meet, to get a GP appointment, or to find a dentist for their children – and the Conservatives just don’t seem to care. We do care. That’s why, at conference and beyond, we are focusing on the things that matter most to people across the country: the cost-of-living crisis, the NHS crisis and the environmental crisis. With a general election looming, this will be a conference full of big ideas to get the Conservatives out, change our country for the better, and deliver the fair deal people deserve. And I know it will be a lot of fun too! Have a great conference. Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Welcome to Conference from Mark Pack, Party President What a quartet of years it has been since our last in-person autumn conference, which was also in Bournemouth. As with four years ago, this is likely to be our last autumn conference before a Westminster general election. But we’ve learnt and grown a lot since then. Our local government base is much larger, with net gains in every round of local elections since then. Our network of campaign staff around the country is much bigger. Our campaign teams are more experienced and better trained. Our political messaging is more finely honed, based on both doorstep feedback and market research. Our range of top candidates is more diverse and our campaign technology is much improved. So we can look forward with increased confidence to the possibility of a general election soon and to the certainty of another crucial round of local elections next May. To support that, we need to have the right policies, so it’s great to see the range of motions on the agenda for this conference. Particular thanks should go to Dick Newby and everyone involved in drawing up the premanifesto that we’ll be debating. Watch out too for the excellent range of training available. You’d have to pay thousands of pounds to get access to the sort of training conference provides at no extra cost! Whether you’re coming in person, or joining online, I hope you enjoy conference, and make good use of it to boost campaigning in your area. Please don’t hesitate to grab me for any questions you have, or drop me an email on president@libdems.org.uk Mark Pack, President of the Liberal Democrats Conference information If you have any questions on-site, please ask a steward or go to the Information Desk in the main foyer of the BIC.
