Getting a DBS Check

Getting a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check (Safeguarding purposes)

If you think that you may need to get a DBS check (formerly CRB) because of the role you holding the party, here is some guidance.

The LibDems get their DBS checks done through a third party agency called Criminal Records Services. Any applicants for a DBS check will need to complete an online form and then supply us with three identification documents which include things like a passport, drivers licence and utility bills. (A full list of suitable documents can be found here)  These will need to be ratified by a senior officer in your local party confirming that the image on any photo ID is a good likeness, you look about the right age for your date of birth and any home address details are correct and consistent across all documents. You will also need to confirm in writing that you give consent for us to process your application.

Costs -

  • If you are getting a check on behalf of an MPs Office or local party office they will need to confirm that they are happy to pay for it.
  • You will also need to confirm whether or not you are a volunteer or an employee of the party as this affects the cost.

Definitions of different levels

Enhanced Checks - are for people working directly (and regularly) with vulnerable groups providing personal care, support, guidance or help with finance. We have to be able to justify an application for an enhanced check (not just because you or we would like it). A good example is someone who regularly transports young people in their car unaccompanied by another adult for the purpose of canvassing or deliveries.

Standard Checks - These checks are for people working in professions such as Legal, Finance, Security or that are registered with the correct authorities such as the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), or people working within the NHS Setting such as medical administrators.

Basic Checks - These can be obtained by any individual or organisation if they have the applicant's consent  There are no criteria that need to be met to be eligible to apply for such a check

Time-frames can differ but the average is 4 weeks from the time we have all of your documentation and completed form

Confidentiality - Please be reassured for all checks we will only be able to see that there is nothing or something to see on your DBS certificate - not the detail contained within it.

How to apply - If you wish to apply for a DBS check please contact the People Team to start the process.
