Councillor James Baker is the leader of our Council group on Calderdale Council. He is an environmental campaigner and a privacy advocate who champions civil liberties and personal freedoms. James is a passionate champion of Liberal values.
Before joining the Liberal Democrats, James worked for the NO2ID campaign. NO2ID led the fight against the introduction of ID cards and was one of the most successful single-issue campaigns of all time.
James has experience of working and living across the Yorkshire and Humber Region. Living in Otley and working at the University of Leeds before moving to Calderdale and running his own business.
James now works for the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors. Helping to train and develop Liberal Democrat Councillors in Local Government. As a Councillor James has led campaigns on green issues. Committing the Council to oppose fracking and arguing for tough targets to tackle climate change. As a Calderdale resident whose business was flooded James has first-hand experience of the impact of extreme weather, flooding and climate change.
He wants to a Europe where we work together to tackle this issue, and his children grow up into a world without catastrophic climate change.
James believes that in an interconnected modern world we need to develop democratic international organisations to help govern society. Only by working together can we tackle the big issues we face. To tackle climate change, rising populism, international development, regulation of technology, surveillance, and privacy we need to be a leading voice in Europe.
