Karen Ward

North Norfolk

Karen is already a District Councillor for the Coastal Ward in North Norfolk, where she was instrumental in NNDC being the first Council in Norfolk to declare a Climate Emergency. Until recently she was the Portfolio Holder for Planning and Housing, so understands the urgent need to deliver Local Homes for Local People.

For the last two years Karen has represented North Norfolk on the RSA Food, Farming and Countryside Commission, so she understands the unique challenges faced by residents and businesses in this rural and coastal constituency.

Karen worked globally in the private sector for many years, before moving into academia. This gave her deep insight into evidence-based decision making. This was followed by several years as a Senior Civil Servant, where she learned how to get things done across Whitehall. In recent years she has run a business advisory firm working with local, national and global clients.

Karen was raised in a family which taught her the value of public service and sees her role on the District Council as community leadership – giving a voice to all residents. She believes strongly in community engagement and participation – supporting residents to create the place they want to play, live and work.

Many of the challenges faced by society today cannot be solved in isolation – Karen’s mediation and facilitation skills enable her to work across political, social and economic boundaries to find simple solutions which communities can put into action.

As Mum to two young adult sons, Karen is acutely aware of the challenges faced by young people in rural and coastal communities and is committed to ensuring their voice is brought into local decision making.
