Liberal Democrats International Office works in the Middle East and North Africa Region mostly through the WFD (Westminster Foundation for Democracy) Programmes.
Through our work with the Foundation, we make a tangible impact on the quality and space for political participation in many countries in the region in many vital areas. We actively support our sister-parties using unique peer-to-peer relationships as a learning model. This support enables them to organise their party in a way which effectively engages young people and women as well as guides them to develop structures which are essential to ensure that the parties’ elected members can represent the views of the wider party. We also assist in strengthening internal policy-making mechanisms and work together to develop effective and efficient campaign base for our partners.
We also work very closely with the Arab Alliance of Freedom and Democracy (AAFD), which is comprised of Arab liberal parties and activists in the Arab world. AAFD is committed to the principles of freedom, responsibility, pluralism, tolerance, market economy, civil state and separation of religion from state affairs. The Alliance helps its member parties to promote liberal reforms for a life in peace and prosperity in the Arab world.
We currently work with parties in Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco and Lebanon.
