The Liberal Democrats believe that the UK should emerge from the pandemic striving to become fairer, greener and more caring. Yet the Conservatives are taking this country in the opposite direction.
The bills announced in the Queen's Speech will deepen inequality, leave the climate crisis unchecked and further marginalise our society's most vulnerable.
Their so-called “Electoral Integrity Bill” will make it harder for people to vote by insisting on showing photo ID at polling stations. This change will disproportionately impact people of colour, as well as people on lower incomes and older people. It will rip power away from communities as individuals’ democratic rights are undermined.
Other bills include the Environment Bill, delayed since 2018 when it was first introduced by Teresa May, does not go far enough to protect the natural world. Meanwhile, the Tories continue to shamefully ignore the essential service of unpaid carers in their Health and Care Bill, despite their vital role - pandemic or no pandemic.
For a more extensive run-down on the proposed Bills see:
I am dismayed but not shocked by the Tories’ continued assault on civil liberties, accessibility to housing, their dismissal of carers and neglect of the environment.
The Liberal Democrats will continue to oppose the government’s disastrous plans and campaign to put Britain's post-covid recovery first.
