"A national disgrace" - Tim Farron slams Government over pollution in Windermere

21 Aug 2025

EMBARGO: IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Liberal Democrat Cumbria MP and Environment Spokesperson Tim Farron has described the results of the Big Windermere Survey, showing high concentrations of E coli and IE bacteria, as a “disgrace”.

The Big Windermere Survey, made up of over 1,000 samples taken over more than two years, has shown that the lake, which has had millions of litres of raw sewage dumped in it by United Utilities, had concentrations of bacteria consistent with poor bathing quality. New analysis has also revealed high levels of phosphorus in the lake.

Commenting on the results of the Big Windermere Survey, Liberal Democrat MP and Environment Spokesperson Tim Farron said:

“This is a national disgrace. Windermere is a beautiful body of water which is part of our heritage and community - protected and enjoyed by generations before us. We should continue that legacy by protecting and cherishing it for generations to come.

“Instead, United Utilities and other privatised water companies are polluting our natural environment, failing to invest in infrastructure, and ripping off ratepayers.

“I’m calling on the government to go further and urgently set up its planned new regulator, with real teeth. This cannot continue on for years. We need action now. And bonuses at United Utilities should not be allowed to happen until we have seen vast improvements. In the meantime, Steve Reed must set out a Windermere plan to save this precious jewel in the crown of our waterways.”
