Afghan Data Breach: Lib Dems call for urgent investigation and for MOD to "stop burying its head in the sand, now"

15 Aug 2025

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Responding to the news that there has been another Afghan data breach, Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Helen Maguire said:

“This latest Afghan data breach is an alarming indictment of the Government’s failure to protect those who risked everything to help Britain and our Armed Forces and their families.

"Thousands of Afghans now face the terrifying possibility of being identified by those who want to harm them.

"Through staggering incompetence and clearly inadequate security standards with contractors, the Government has put them and their families in harm’s way. We need an immediate, fully independent investigation into all of these breaches to identify exactly how this happened, and ensure it can never happen again through robust action. The MOD must stop burying its head in the sand, now."
