Budget's £190m for the NHS would run the health service for just eight hours, Lib Dems warn
EMBARGO: Immediate Release
The Liberal Democrats have warned that today's Budget fails to tackle the “fundamental” NHS crisis, noting that the £190 million allocated for winter pressures covers barely eight hours of spending.
The Budget contained nothing new on doctors, nurses, dentists or maternity care. Instead it offered a promise to "explore opportunities to support", another independent review, and an AI challenge prize that is not solely for health.
The party said the £37 billion the Chancellor highlighted today has so far failed to turn the health service around due to a “failure to fix the front door, back door or the roof”. Meanwhile:
- The front door: general practice now receives its smallest share of NHS spending in a decade, hundreds of practices have closed, and NHS dentistry has become a luxury. Patients are turning to A&E in desperation.
- The back door: more than 13,000 people are stuck in hospital despite being well enough to leave, because there is no care in place to get them home.
- The roof: the repair bill for crumbling hospitals has reached £17.3 billion, with leaking roofs and broken equipment closing wards and wasting staff time.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for a new approach that shifts investment into GPs, dentistry and community services, fixes social care and step-down care this Parliament, and brings forward the New Hospital Programme so broken buildings are repaired or replaced rather than patched up.
Liberal Democrat Health and Social Care Spokesperson, Helen Morgan MP, said:
"Today's Budget left our broken NHS as an afterthought. Our health service urgently needs its front door, back door and roof fixed after years of Conservative neglect, yet the Chancellor had nothing to say.
"Labour inherited a crumbling NHS but they’ve failed to turn it around. People are still being treated in crammed hospital corridors, GP surgeries keep closing and basic services like maternity remain unsafe while billions are paid out in compensation.
"The only tweak is £190 million to get through winter. The NHS spends that in about eight hours. It won't touch the sides without fundamental reform.
"Liberal Democrats would rescue the NHS by investing in primary care and community services and fixing broken buildings, so people spend less time in hospital and get help sooner, closer to home. Ministers must act before it's too late."
