Channel crossings: Govt must back up their big promises with actions

22 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate release

Responding to reports that more migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats so far this year than in the whole of 2024, Liberal Democrat Home Affairs Spokesperson Max Wilkinson MP said:

"We all want to stop these dangerous Channel crossings, so these latest figures are deeply concerning and frankly shocking. Both Labour - and the Conservatives before them - have failed to break the grip of the gangs and bring the numbers down.

“Now is the time for this Labour government to back up their big promises with actions. They must stop hotels being used to house asylum seekers in town and city centres up and down the country and secure serious and large-scale returns agreements with all safe countries so that those who don't have a right to be here can be swiftly returned.”
