China phone hacking: a major failure of national security
EMBARGO: Immediate Release
Responding to reports that China hacked the mobile phones of senior officials in Downing Street for several years, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Calum Miller MP, said:
"It is appalling that under successive Conservative governments, which claimed to be tough on China, the CCP was able to bug the centres of power in this country for years. This isn't just a glitch; it represents a major failure of national security.
"We need an immediate Intelligence and Security Committee review to find out how the heart of British Government was left wide open. This level of CCP penetration is completely unacceptable - and proves that the UK’s defences are simply not fit for purpose.
"It's also high time the Labour Government pulled its head out the sand, called out the threat and finally added China to the enhanced Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS) list.”
