China spies case: Govt needs to block super embassy or will put national security at risk

12 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to reports that British intelligence agencies were prevented from submitting spying concerns over the planning application for the Chinese super embassy in London, Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Calum Miller said:

“The Government’s approach to China is putting our national security at risk. It needs to step in now and block China’s new super embassy.

“It is staggering that the Government haven’t asked fundamental questions about what Beijing is planning to do. Reports that it has not allowed our intelligence agencies to contribute to the decision are shocking.

“Giving the green light to the super embassy being built in the heart of the City of London and above critical data connections would enable Chinese espionage on an industrial scale.

“We need to see urgent answers around the plans for a secret basement which could be facilitating intelligence gathering and acting as spy dungeons.

“Threats to our democracy cannot be downplayed. It's time that this Government stood up to China and put British security and the safety of British residents first.”
