CHOGM: Debt relief commitment crucial for UK's upcoming G20 presidency, say Lib Dems

3 Nov 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the Prime Minister implying he will continue international debt relief whilst at CHOGM, Liberal Democrat International Development Spokesperson, Monica Harding MP, said:

"This is a step in the right direction, but long overdue. We now need to see it translated into a real and sustainable solution during the UK’s G20 Presidency next year.

"As geopolitical instability worsens, the UK has a responsibility to champion international cooperation. The Liberal Democrats have set out six key areas for reform, and we urge Ministers to treat them as an urgent priority.

"Genuine reform would allow developing countries to bring debts under control, secure sustainable financing, crack down on illicit finance, and build the global cooperation needed to confront the climate crisis. Fixing this broken system is not just the right thing to do; it keeps the wider world stable and Britain secure."
