Cooper: Reeves red tape plans "will do precious little" without customs union

21 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: 00:01 Tuesday 21st October

Responding to new plans from the Chancellor to “scrap paperwork and cut red tape” to save money for UK businesses, Daisy Cooper, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson, said:

“If the Chancellor was serious about cutting red tape she would tackle the mind-blowing two billion extra pieces of business paperwork created by Brexit by pursuing an ambitious tailor-made UK-EU customs union.

“On its own, simply cutting unnecessary paperwork rules will do precious little to buck the trend of shops shutting and jobs taking a hit.

“The Government must scrap their damaging jobs tax, fix the broken business rates system and go for growth by unleashing trade for British businesses with Europe.”
