Davey: Burnham should drop Labour’s red lines and take up Lib Dem plan to fix broken relationship with Europe

12 Oct 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Ahead of the Prime Minister's statement this afternoon, where he is expected to discuss closer ties with Europe and Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 Brexit referendum, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:

"For too long, successive governments have turned a blind eye to the huge damage caused by the Johnson-Farage Brexit deal. I really hope this marks a real turning point.

"The Liberal Democrats have set out a concrete plan to join the single market and a customs union, so we can grow the economy and put money back in people's pockets with tax cuts.

"Andy Burnham should drop Labour’s red lines and take up our plan now. We are willing to engage with anyone who shares our vision of fixing the broken relationship with Europe so we can strengthen Britain's economy and defences.

"Every day and month we delay starting serious talks with the EU, we do more damage to our economy. Let's restore our trading links, tear down new barriers like Made in Europe and give our economy the growth and jobs boost businesses and people are crying out for.”
