- Ed Davey celebrates as Lib Dems win control of Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire and are set to win Shropshire, all for the first time ever
- Lib Dems kick Conservatives out and become largest party on four other councils
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has said that today’s local election results have put the party on course to overtake the Conservatives at the next General Election.
This is the first time in history that the Liberal Democrats have beaten both the Conservatives and Labour at the same local elections, and the party now controls more councils across the UK than the Conservatives.
The Liberal Democrats have taken overall control of Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire and are set to win Shropshire county council, all for the first time. The party has also kicked the Conservatives out and become the largest party in Devon, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire and Wiltshire.
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:
“We have overtaken the Conservatives at these local elections, putting us on track to overtake them at the next General Election too.
“From Wiltshire to Oxfordshire, from Shropshire to Devon, the Liberal Democrats have replaced the Conservatives as the party of Middle England.
“Lifelong Conservative voters have put their faith in the Liberal Democrats because they are appalled by the Conservatives lurching to the extremes and cosying up to Nigel Farage.
“Kemi Badenoch sneered at the Liberal Democrats for being the party that will fix your church roof. Today voters across the country have chosen our community politics over the Conservative Party’s neglect and disdain.”
