Faith in courts must be restored as backlog hits record high

Responding to the backlog of crown court cases reaching new highs in England and Wales, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson, Jess Brown-Fuller MP, said:

"Our justice system is still reeling from years of catastrophic Conservative failure. Behind the 80,000 cases stuck in this staggering backlog are victims of crime who are being forced to wait years for closure, leaving their lives in limbo.

"While no one denies the sheer scale of the mess this Government inherited, victims of crime are tired of excuses and cannot be expected to put their lives on hold while waiting for justice. We urgently need to see a credible, long-term plan from the Government to clear the backlog and get a grip on this crisis so that faith in our courts can be restored."
