FIFA Own Goal: Lib Dems call for international fans charter as world cup final tickets rise by over 5400%

The Liberal Democrats have today called for the FA to push for the establishment of an international fans charter to protect against FIFA’s unfair and exploitative ticketing practices, following exclusive analysis revealing that World Cup final ticket prices have skyrocketed by over 5,400% since 2002.

To increase transparency about the pricing process, FIFA officials should be called upon to give evidence at the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee to ensure fans are no longer treated as “cash cows”.

New data, commissioned by the Liberal Democrats, has revealed the true impact of how the introduction of controversial dynamic pricing for the 2026 World Cup has priced fans out of the game.

The analysis of World Cup ticket prices since 2002 reveals:

  • The price of a Category 1 ticket for the World Cup Final has risen from £439 in 2002 to a staggering £24,176 in 2026 - a cash increase of 5,407.3% (and a 2,797.6% increase in real terms adjusted for inflation).
  • The average ticket price across all categories has jumped from £97 in 2002 to £271 in 2026, a cash increase of 179.4%.
  • For the 2026 tournament, FIFA has introduced dynamic ticket pricing alongside the traditional ballot. This means ticket prices are driven up by demand algorithms, heavily penalising fans trying to see high-profile fixtures.

With Home Nations fans facing astronomical travel and accommodation costs just to reach the tournament, the Liberal Democrats warn that FIFA's ticketing system has rigged the game against loyal, everyday supporters. An International Fans Charter would establish a governing framework designed to protect, represent, and formalise the rights of fans who support their home team across the globe, including against greedy ticket pricing.

Liberal Democrat Culture, Media, and Sport Spokesperson, Anna Sabine MP, said:

"Football belongs to the fans, but FIFA is treating them like cash cows. The predatory dynamic pricing exploits fans desire to support their country and their team.

"To see some tickets surge to over £24,000 is simply a disgrace. Fans shouldn’t be forced to choose between remortgaging their homes or missing out on supporting their country.

"Liberal Democrats are calling for the international fans charter to safeguard supporters against these unfair ticketing practices. We need to put a stop to these corporate pricing strategies before regular fans are priced out of live sport forever.

“FIFA clearly is not standing up for fans, someone has to.”
