GDP: Government asleep behind the wheel

Responding to the latest GDP figures, which show the UK's economy contracted by 0.1% in April, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“Today’s figures show that Trump’s idiotic war, cheered on by Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch, is having a crushing impact on British families and businesses - yet the Government is asleep behind the wheel.

"Our economy was already firmly stuck in reverse after Labour’s two anti-growth Budgets, and now it’s clear how vulnerable this has left us in the face of Trumpflation and geopolitical turmoil.

"Now is the time for the Government to see sense and rebuild trade ties with our reliable partners in Europe, to allow British businesses to grow. At the same time, the Chancellor must urgently help people struggling with the cost of living by slashing energy bills through an essential energy guarantee and cutting fuel duty by 10p, as Liberal Democrats have been calling for."
