GDP stats: “snails would scoff” at pace of economic growth

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news that UK economic growth slowed to 0.3% between April and June, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“Snails would scoff at the pace that our economy is growing. Businesses are being crushed under the weight of the Government’s jobs tax, spiralling energy costs and reams of red tape, all holding down wages and the growth needed to rebuild our public services.

“The Conservative Party led us into this economic quagmire but this Labour government has failed to break from the years of mismanagement. Their rhetoric on economic growth has not survived contact with reality.

“It is time to free our businesses from the burdens this Government has placed upon them. That starts by scrapping this damaging jobs tax, slashing red tape for our exporters to Europe and taking on Liberal Democrat proposals to rapidly bring down energy costs for industry. Only then will we generate the economic growth needed to protect family finances and rebuild our public services.”
