Government borrowing stats: "alarm bells should be ringing" ahead of Budget

21 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the news that Government borrowing in September hit the highest level for the month in five years, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper said:

"Alarm bells should be ringing for the Government ahead of the Budget. This cannot go on.

"The Conservatives left the economy in a terrible state, paying tens of billions every year on debt interest after they crashed the economy in the mini budget.

"But this government has made mistake after mistake, failing to get our economy growing again.

“To balance the books and bring down borrowing, we need growth. That means striking a new, bespoke UK-EU customs union, bringing down energy prices and investing in skills. The Chancellor must also reverse her punishing jobs tax.”
