Hadush Kebatu release: Lib Dems call for prison governor to step down if found responsible

27 Oct 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate release

Ahead of the inquiry following the wrongly released prisoner and David Lammy's statement in Parliament, Liberal Democrat MP for Chelmsford, and Spokesperson on Women and Equalities Marie Goldman said:

“After days of calling for an inquiry, we of course welcome one - but it simply shouldn’t have taken this long. This was a grave mistake, and the public deserves an answer to how such a serious failure could happen.

"Whoever is responsible must face real consequences. If the prison governor is found to be at fault, he should do the right thing and step down.

"It’s utterly unacceptable that public safety was put at risk in this way. Both the Government and the Prison Service must own up to their failures and guarantee that these mistakes are never repeated.”
