Inflation rate rise: Govt must "stand up to Trump" tariff threats

21 Jan 2026

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to the latest inflation rate rising to 3.4% in December, Daisy Cooper MP, Liberal Democrat Treasury Spokesperson, said:

"Inflation ticking up while families continue to struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table is a sign of a Government totally unwilling to fix this country’s economic malaise.

"We desperately need the Chancellor to pull her head out of the sand and tackle the cost of living crisis plaguing households across the country - starting with bold action to bring down energy bills.

"Trump’s threat of new tariffs is hanging over British families and businesses like the sword of Damocles, risking yet another cost of living hit. That's one more reason why the Government must stand up to Trump, force him to back down and protect Britain from a new wave of price rises."
