Interest rates: Govt must scrap jobs tax to get mortgage rates down

19 Jun 2025

EMBARGO: Immediate Release

Responding to interest rates being held at 4.25%, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP said:

“This signals more mortgage pain for countless households.

“The Chancellor’s pig’s ear of a jobs tax is pushing up prices and Donald Trump’s senseless trade war only adds to the problem.

“If ministers were serious about getting mortgage rates down, they would scrap their jobs tax and work with our European and Commonwealth allies to create a coalition of the willing to end Trump’s trade war.”
