Investment in climate-resilient infrastructure long overdue: we are woefully unprepared, say Lib Dems
Following publication of the the Climate Change Committee’s five-yearly progress report, Liberal Democrat Energy and Climate Spokesperson Pippa Heylings MP said:
"This report makes clear that we need to be better prepared for heatwaves regularly exceeding 40 degrees. Inaction on climate adaptation carries a steep price and our hesitancy to act is already undermining our national security, with food security threatened and costs at the pump and at home continuing to spiral.
"It is clear that burying our heads in the sand will cost billions in public welfare. The Government must set robust targets to better prepare across all departments and acting to protect people, homes and communities from the devastating impacts of climate change.
“Badenoch and Farage utterly dismiss the scale of this challenge, yet if they actually spoke to farmers or coastal communities, they'd know that we are already feeling the impacts of climate change on our doorstep.
“The Liberal Democrats are unapologetic about keeping the climate crisis on the agenda. We know that people want the facts so they can be better prepared and protect their way of life whilst making the changes necessary. The case for bold, sustained investment in clean energy and resilient infrastructure has never been clearer.”
